Rakesh Kumar Upadhyay

Shri Rakesh Kumar Upadhyay, joined BSNL as Chairman & Managing Director on 30 th April 2011. Shri Upadhyay is a B. Tech in Electronics Engineering from IT, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He is also a graduate of Defence Services Staff College , Wellington and was awarded M.Sc.(DS) degree by Madras University . He has done MBA in Marketing Management from Indira Gandhi Open University. His career began in Department of Telecommunications in 1975 after his selection by UPSC for Indian Telecom Service. In DoT, he gained experience in areas of Planning, Installation and Commissioning, Commercial Administration and Operations. In October 1996, he proceeded on Deputation to TCIL, where he remained till August 1999. During his deputation, he successfully worked as Project Director in the Foreign Projects at Sana and as General Manager in Yemen.

Malathi Veeraraghavan

Malathi Veeraraghavan is a Professor in the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. Dr. Veeraraghavan received her BTech degree from Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) in 1984, and MS and PhD degrees from Duke University in 1985 and 1988, respectively. After a ten-year career at Bell Laboratories, she served on the faculty at Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York from 1999-2002. Her research work on optical networks is supported by NSF and DOE. She holds twenty-nine patents and has received five Best-Paper awards. She served as an Associate Editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking from 2006-2008, and as Technical Program Chair for IEEE ICC2002.

High-speed networks in support of scientific applications

The volume of scientific data collected by instruments, from experimental studies, and from simulations executed on supercomputers is growing rapidly. Scientists need to move these large data sets from the sources where they are generated to their laboratories. In additions, scientific applications require remote instrument control, remote visualization, and remote computational steering. This talk describes state-of-the-art high-speed networking solutions to meet these needs.

Mohan Kumar

Mohan Kumar is a Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.  His current research interests are in mobile and pervasive computing, sensor systems, opportunistic computing, and distributed computing. He has published over 170 articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings and supervised several Doctoral Dissertations and Masters Theses in the above areas. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Research Labs and the Texas Advanced Research Program in the US; and the ARC and DSTO in Australia. He is a co-founder of the IEEE International Conference on pervasive computing and communications (PerCom). and a founding editor of the Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal. Prior to joining The University of Texas at Arlington in 2001, he held faculty positions at the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia (1992-2000), and The Indian Institute of Science (1986-1992).

Raj Jain

Raj Jain is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of ACM, a winner of ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time award, CDAC-ACCS Foundation Award 2009, Hind Rattan 2011 award, and ranks among the top 70 in Citeseer's list of Most Cited Authors in Computer Science. Dr. Jain is currently a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Previously, he was one of the Co-founders of Nayna Networks, Inc - a next generation telecommunications systems company in San Jose, CA. He was a Senior Consulting Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation in Littleton, Mass and then a professor of Computer and Information Sciences at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He is the author of ``Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis,'' which won the 1991 ``Best-Advanced How-to Book, Systems'' award from Computer Press Association. His fourth book entitled " High-Performance TCP/IP: Concepts, Issues, and Solutions," was published by Prentice Hall in November 2003. He has recently co-edited "Quality of Service Architectures for Wireless Networks: Performance Metrics and Management," published in April 2010.
Venkat Padmanabhan

Venkat Padmanabhan is a Principal Researcher and Research Manager at Microsoft Research India in Bangalore, where he founded and now leads the Mobility, Networks, and Systems group. Venkat was previously with Microsoft Research Redmond for almost 9 years. His research interests are broadly in networked and mobile systems, and his current work is on indoor localization and efficient mobile communication. He served as general co-chair for ACM Sigcomm 2010, as program co-chair for ACM Sigcomm 2012, and as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington, where he has taught and served on student thesis committees. Venkat holds a B.Tech. from IIT Delhi and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, all in Computer Science. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Distinguished Scientist of the ACM.

Partho Mishra

Dr. Partho Mishra is responsible for Cisco’s worldwide Service Provider Access Routing products, including the ASR 901/903, ME 3400/3600/3800 and CPT 50/200/600 product lines.

He was previously Vice President and General Manager at Marvell Semiconductors, where his business unit developed WiFi, Bluetooth and WiMax chip-sets for laptops, smart-phones, digital cameras, gaming platforms and access points. This included pioneering low power and MiFi wireless technologies that were adopted in consumer electronics devices such as the SONY PSP/PS3, Microsoft Xbox and Apple Iphone.

Prabhakar Venkata

Prabhakar Venkata's area of work is in networked embedded systems. He is the founder member of Zero Energy Networks laboratory (ZENLab) in the Department of Electronic Systems Engg (Formerly CEDT) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. System building, characterization, algorithms, measurements and modelling, energy harvesting technologies and batteryless storage are some of the activities undertaken the laboratory. His group of staff and students work prototype solutions using several wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, ZigBee and RF4CE, RFID, GPRS and 3G etc. The application space encompasses  Agriculture, Healthcare, Security, Forest and wildLife protection, Smart grids and  Consumer Electronics. He currently holds the position of a Senior Scientific Officer in the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering at the IISc.
Title: An implementation study of Relay Selection Schemes for Energy Harvested WSNs
Abstract: In the near future, every thing surrounding us would be capable of sensing its environment and communicating it.  Both
researchers and industries are showing tremendous interests in such a paradigm, called ``Internet of Things'' (IoT). It is fast
shaping into a major element in our daily life. Eliminating the need of powering and maintaining such large number of devices in IoT is a challenge. Thus, we propose to use energy harvesting to power these devices. Since energy harvesting does not guarantee perennial operation by itself, we need to also use other well known techniques to reduce the energy required for reliable transmission. Cooperative relaying in wireless networks is known to improve data reliability due to data repetition and cooperation amongst neighbouring nodes. In this talk I will discuss the implementation results from the ZENLab's  energy harvesting WSN testbed.  We study the implementation of a few relaying schemes for ``decode and forward'' data repetition. Especially, we take into account different energy profiles and channel characteristics. We propose schemes to (a) maximize the packet reception ratio (PRR) by cooperation and (b) minimize the average packet delay (APD) by cooperation amongst nodes.

D. Manjunath received his BE from Mysore University, MS from IIT Madras and PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1986, 1989 and 1993 respectively. He has been with the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Bombay since July 1998 where he is now a Professor. He also heads the Computer Centre at IIT Bombay. He has previously worked in the Corporate R&D Center of General Electric in Scehenectady NY (1990), Computer and Information Sciences Dept of the University of Delaware (1992-93), Computer Science Department, University of Toronto (1993-94) and the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT Kanpur (1994-98). His research interests are in the general areas of communication networks and performance analysis. His recent research has concentrated on random networks with applications in wireless and sensor networks, network

Title: Characterising Link Delays from Asynchronous Path Measurements

Abstract: We describe some new results that use asynchronous path measurements to derive link delay characteristics. A stochastic
approximation variant of the Kaczmarz algorithm is developed to estimate the first moments of the link delays from path delay measurements. The
path delay samples are obtained from unicast probe packets that may be transmitted asynchronously.

Huzur Saran

Huzur Saran is the Head of the Department of Computer Science at IIT Delhi.He did his Ph. D in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.His research is focused on Computer Security, Networks and Algorithms. Saran has been a leading advocate of Broadband Wireless and has been actively working in 4G wireless technologies. Saran has worked on the media access control layer of an exploratory 4G wireless systems. He has been investigating wireless access and mesh technologies to enable ICT for rural masses. During 2002-2004 he worked on WIPO: Wireless internet Post Office based on handhelds and Wireless Mesh networks for rural communication.

Title: SPARC (SPectrum-Aware Rural Connectivity)

Abstract: We propose to opportunistically use sub-GHz bands together with existing higher frequency unlicensed and licensed bands for extending the reach of rural broadband. The excellent propagation characteristics of these bands, makes frequencies in the range of 400MHz – 1GHz ideal for long-distance broadband connectivity. In the US, recent FCC rulings specify broad guidelines about how unlicensed (secondary) users can utilize these bands. Secondary users are mandated to look-up databases containing location-specific primary user activity and/or use appropriate spectrum sensing methods to mitigate interference to primary users in the newly emerging cognitive radio paradigm. In India, no such regulations exists, and research has only just begun to characterize unutilized spectrum.

In this talk we will discuss various thrusts of the SPARC project which are: (i) designing a low-cost spectrum-aware wireless mesh network for long-distance rural backhaul, (ii) developing high-performance but low-cost software defined radio prototypes for the sub-GHz band, (iii) devising new protocols that follow spectrum etiquette between devices using potentially different wireless standards, (iv) characterizing spectrum usage and determining optimal allowed transmit power for secondary users in the rural Indian context, and finally, (v) integration of this research on IIT campus testbeds, with a proof of concept demonstration in Indian rural locations.

As a key member of the Center for Emergency Response Technologies at UC Irvine, Nalini's recent research has focused on enabling resilient and scalable observation and analysis of situational information from multimodal input sources; dynamic adaptation of the underlying systems to enable information flow under massive failures and the dissemination of  rich notifications to members of the public at large.

Title: Enabling a Flexible and Resilient Infrastructure for Disaster Response

Abstract: Response to large scale disasters human or manmade, is becomingly increasingly information-centric; such information can be vital in creating situational awareness for decision-making for response.  Advances in sensing technologies, mobile and pervasive computing, and cyberphysical systems are making available new modalities of information and new channels of communication. In this talk, we discuss the role of adaptive middleware in exploiting these novel technologies to create flexible and resilient distributed systems to enable awareness during different phases of the disaster lifecyle, despite failures in the infrastructure and uncertainty in information.  In particular, the talk will cover recent efforts in exploiting multiple networks to create a resilient infrastructure for information collection and dissemination in disasters. Such multinetwork data collection will help drive semantic middleware techniques to incorporate diverse sensors and inputs in a structured manner to generate situational awareness  in crisis scenarios and strategies to leverage and fuse information from heterogeneous sensor devices in a timely and reliable manner.  The talk will also cover the integration multiple networks and access technologies for the customized and reliable dissemination of SA information to stakeholders, especially at the community level to citizens.

Sharad Mehrotra is a Professor in the School of Information and Computer Science at University of California, Irvine and founding Director of the Center for Emergency Response Technologies (CERT) at UCI. He has served as the Director and PI of the RESCUE project (Responding to Crisis and Unexpected Events) which, funded by NSF through its large ITR program, spanned 7 schools and consisted of 60 members. He is the recipient of Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor Award in 2005. Prior to joining UCI, he was a member of the faculty at University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign in the Department of Computer Science where he was the recipient of the C. W. Gear Outstanding Junior Faculty Award. Mehrotra has also served as a Scientist at Matsushita Information Technology Laboratory immediately after graduating with a Ph.D. from University of Texas at Austin(1988-1993).

Dr. Salil Kanhere received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA in 2001 and 2003, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. His current research interests include participatory sensing, mobile networking, sensor networks and security. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles on these research topics. He has served on the organizing committee of a number of IEEE and ACM international conferences (e.g,, ACM SenSys, IEEE LCN, IEEE MASS, ACM MSWiM,, IEEE SenseApp, ACM IWCMC, ISSNIP). He is active on the program committee of numerous well-known conferences (e.g., IEE LCN, IEEE DCOSS, IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE WCNC, IEEE PIMRC, IEEE EWSN, etc.). Seshadri Mohan

Seshadri Mohan is currently a Professor and the Chair of Systems Engineering Department at University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). Prior to the current position he served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Acting CEO of IP SerVoniX, where he consulted for several telecommunication firms and venture firms, and served as the CTO of Telsima (formerly known as Kinera). At Telsima, he carried out extensive business development with telecommunications and wireless carriers both in the US and India. Prior to launching IP SerVoniX, he was with Comverse, Wakefield, Massachusetts, as Chief Technology Officer. At Comverse, he was responsible for starting and guiding an advanced development center, developing architectures and solutions to facilitate the development of wireless and next generation messaging products, enhancing the patent portfolio, and evaluating technology strategies to pursue and providing recommendations to the executive management team. Besides these positions, his industry experience spans New Jersey-based Telcordia (formerly Bellcore) and Bell Laboratories. At Telcordia, as a Senior Research Scientist, he led many projects in the area of wireless and next generation technologies, including advancing a multimedia-capable softswitch, in which areas he holds several patents. Prior to joining Telcordia, he was an associate professor at Clarkson and Wayne State Universities, where he developed the communications curriculum and conducted research in computer networking and source coding algorithms.

Title: Social Networks Aware Wireless Networks

Abstract: With larger bandwidths (3G/4G/WiMax capabilities), powerful processing capabilities, better displays, and user friendly and even haptic interfaces, mobile platforms have shown a promising future for social computing applications. However, advances in web technologies (such as HTML5, AJAX, etc.) have led to the development of complex set of applications with rich userinterfaces that demands a nimble and robust architecture for social computing applications that is adaptive to the network constraints and bottleneck issues. Specifically, the class of social networks-aware wireless networks faces a number of challenges requiring an understanding of and a solution approach to the following:
  • A framework for providing service level agreements (SLAs) with social computing application providers and mobile network operators;
  • A framework architecture for augmenting social networking applications with an awareness of mobile network capabilities; such awareness could include routing to determine a path that would guarantee the required QoS; this framework could be integrated into the previous framework for SLAs;
  • Standardized mechanisms for associating applications with application-level QoS;
  • Identifying suitable protocols that would transform application-level QoS into network-level QoS by identifying suitable protocol parameters that would guarantee the end-to-end application-level QoS; and
  • Standardized infrastructure that would facilitate user mobility and access to applications independent of user locations.
This talk will address some of the above challenges specifically in the context of IP Multimedia Subsystems for next generation wireless networks.

Title: Internet of Things and the Evolution of the Internet

Abstract: We are at point in networking history when more things or objects are connected to the internet than people, with an estimated 50 billion connected devices by year 2020. ‘Born’ circa 2008, the Internet of Things or IoT is the next evolution of the Internet. However, networks must evolve from being an infrastructure that only delivers information and applications to end-users (mostly people) to a framework that makes intelligent decisions, is massively scalable, elastic, programmable and secure and connects Machines to Machines (M2M), Machines to Humans (M2H) and Objects/Things to Machines/Humans. This overview presents some of the key attributes of the IoT-driven Internet and its impact on applications and services architecture.

He joined Bell Labs in 1991 and over the years has played a key role in defining and developing strategic technologies and applications for Bell Labs and Avaya. His recent focus has been in the area of Context-Aware Communications applications, leveraging technologies such as SIP, web services, search and communication analytics. Prior to joining Cisco in 2010, Arvind was CTO and President, Global Services at Sify Technologies; CTO at Bharti Airtel for Enterprise Services; Vice President & Global Head of Product Management for Enterprise Network Services at Tata Communications.

Krishnaswamy holds masters and doctorate degrees in computer science from Yale University and a bachelor’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology. He is the author of numerous papers and articles on a variety of telecommunications and Internet topics and has been an invited speaker at numerous conference and industry events. He holds ten US and international patents.
Title: Enterprise Communications: Transitions and Opportunities

Abstract: In today’s era of Unified Communications, the enterprise communications stack is an apparently mature collection of capabilities and technologies. IP Telephony, Instant messaging and presence, audio, video and web conferencing and voice mail are its staple components. However, a variety of forces with origins in the consumer marketplace are shaking these well-settled foundations. These changes are being driven across the board - in user experience, delivery models, underlying technologies and protocols, hardware and software structures. In this talk I will outline the transitions enabled by cloud, mobile and other technologies - including the challenges for vendors, service providers and end customers in making these transitions.

Rishikesha T. Krishnan

Rishikesha T. Krishnan has been studying the links between strategy and innovation for almost 20 years.
Prof. Krishnan is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, and Professor of Corporate Strategy & Policy at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), India.

He completed a 3-year term as Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship at IIMB in August 2010. He was the Fall semester 2008 Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania. In November 2010, Prof. Krishnan received the Dewang Mehta Award for Best Teacher in Strategic Management.

He has served on a number of committees set up by the Government of India, Nasscom and CII related to innovation in India. He is on the boards of four companies and is a trustee of the Foundation for Excellence India Trust (, an organization committed to helping economically underprivileged and academically talented students complete their higher education through one of India’s largest scholarship programmes.

He writes extensively, and has more than 140 publications spanning outlets that include refereed journals, the popular press, case studies, book chapters, and a book.

Professor Krishnan’s book From Jugaad to Systematic Innovation: The Challenge for India, published in February 2010 identified the challenges faced by India in enhancing industrial innovation and proposed an agenda to enhance innovation output (see for details). In his comments on the book jacket, MindTree Vice Chairman Subroto Bagchi wrote: “Rishikesha Krishnan is doubtlessly among India’s foremost chroniclers of the innovation journey. His book is a great account of the history of innovation in the post-industrial era. He has his pulse on issues that hold Indians from going to the next level.”

He holds an M.Sc. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur; and an M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems (now Management Science & Engineering) from Stanford University. He obtained his doctorate from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, where he won the outstanding thesis proposal award instituted by the Industrial Finance Corporation of India.


Srini Rajam

Srini Rajam is the Chairman and CEO of Ittiam Systems and has been responsible for building Ittiam from its inception. Under his leadership, the company has grown its global customer base to over 300 customers today and has received several accolades in India and abroad.  

Prior to Ittiam, Srini was the Managing Director of Texas Instruments India from 1995-2000 and was instrumental in making TI India one of the most valuable R&D centres for TI globally. He also served as a Member of the TI Asia Leadership Team and Chairman of TI Asia advisory team for regional technical council. Srini has also donned several industry roles that include serving as the Member of Governing Council of the Department of Electronics’ Software Technology Parks, Member of Karnataka State IT Task Force and Chairman of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

Srini has a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the School of Automation, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Madurai University.


Satya Gupta

Dr. Satya Gupta is the Co-founder and CEO of Concept2Silicon Systems, working on enabling semiconductor products and systems for wireless, telecom, medical, and energy applications.

He has more than 22 years of experience in semiconductors, covering design, CAD, systems and embedded software. Prior to Concept2Silicon Systems, Dr. Gupta was Co-founder and Vice-President, Engineering & Technology at Open-Silicon, responsible for worldwide engineering and technology development. Before that Dr. Gupta co-founded Intel Microelectronics services, an ASIC organization within Intel, and built engineering teams both in USA and India. He worked at Intel for 13 years in various engineering and executive management positions.

He has received the prestigious IEEE Gordon Bell Award for high performance computing for his work on breaking Tera Flop barrier first-time. He has authored more than 40 technical papers and has six patents. He is a founding member of ISA and has served on its Executive Council for three years.

Dr. Gupta received his Ph.D from Old Dominion University, Virginia; M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; and BE from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.


Viswanath Poosala

Dr. Viswanath Poosala (Vishy) is the Head of Bell Labs India. In his current role, he leads a world-class R&D team in delivering research breakthroughs and internal technology ventures, and helping to grow Alcatel-Lucent’s business. Vishy is passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation. He mentors startups in Bangalore and advises Indian companies in creating strong innovation practices. His current focus areas include creating novel applications and networking technologies, especially for the emerging markets. Vishy was the Founder and CTO of Geopepper, an Alcatel-Lucent venture delivering innovative location-based services. He has also started multiple websites, including Dr. Poosala is a recognized expert on the business and technical aspects of Mobile applications, Networks, Web 2.0, and Database systems. He has published over 20 technical papers, been granted over 40 patents, received the “Excellence in Innovation” award in India in 2010, and won the Bell Labs President’s Gold Award three times.

Dr. Poosala received his B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Madras, India, in ’92, M.S and Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in ’97. He has been with Bell Labs and Alcatel Lucent Ventures in different roles - researcher, technical manager, CTO, and now the Head of Bell Labs – India. He was also an Adjunct Professor at New York University.

Vikram Srinivasan

Vikram Srinivasan heads the networking research department at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs India. He joined Bell Labs in 2007 and has been worked on Intelligent Transportation Systems, TV Whitespaces and is now working on virtualizing cellular processing and moving it to the cloud. Prior to joining Bell Labs, he was an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. He has published over 50 papers in top tier conferences and journals. His research on Intelligent Transportation Systems has resulted in a new product line from ALU. He currently serves as a associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

Neelesh B. Mehta

Neelesh B. Mehta received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras in 1996, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA in 1997 and 2001, respectively. He is now an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Electrical Communication Eng., Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. Prior to joining IISc, he was a research scientist in AT&T Laboratories, Middletown, NJ, USA from 2001 to 2002, Broadcom Corp., Matawan, NJ, USA from 2002 to 2003, and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), Cambridge, MA, USA from 2003 to 2007.

His research includes work on link adaptation, multiple access protocols,  cellular systems, multiple antenna systems,  cooperative communications, and energy harvesting wireless networks. He was also actively involved in the Radio Access Network (RAN1) standardization activities in 3GPP from 2003 to 2007. He was a TPC co-chair for the wireless communications symposium of ICC 2013, WISARD 2010 and 2011, tracks in SPCOM 2012, National Conference on Communications (NCC) 2011, VTC 2009 (Fall), and Chinacom 2008. He has co-authored 33 IEEE journal papers, 60 conference papers, and three book chapters, and is a co-inventor in 20 issued US patents. He served as an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications from 2008 to 2011, and is now an Editor for IEEE Wireless Communications Letters. He currently serves as the Director of Conference Publications on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society.


Raghuveer BK

Raghuveer BK (Raghu) is Associate Vice President, Head of Communication Products and Head of Technology Office in Products Group of Infosys. Raghu has been with Infosys for about 20 years now and has been responsible for many technology initiatives at Infosys. Santhanakrishnan Raman

Santhanakrishnan Raman is the Managing Director of LSI India Research & Development Pvt. Ltd.  Raman spent 11 years (’93 to ’04) in LSI Milpitas, California and moved to LSI India in 2004.   As MD, Raman has been focusing on driving LSI India’s strategic value-add and executing to LSI’s Global R&D model.  On the functional side, Raman has been working on development of multiple generations of design tools and methodologies in the Foundation R&D group at LSI.  He graduated with an M.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering (Microelectronics) from IIT-Kanpur in ’92 and has also completed an Executive General Management Program (EGMP) from IIM-Bangalore in ’10.  Raman is a co-inventor of 6 US patents.  He is an active participant and representative of LSI at industry associations like ISA, has organized and moderated panel discussions in VLSI Conferences in ’09 and ‘10.  Raman is one of the General Chairs of the upcoming 2013 VLSI Design Conference ( ).

Manoj Dawane

Manoj Ramchandra Dawane is Head of Engagement Practices within Region India and a member of the region’s leadership team. Manoj joined Ericsson in May 2010 as Head of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation.

In his current role, Manoj is responsible for solutioning of all Customer Engagements for Region India. This entails interfacing with telecom operators in the region and evolves their technology strategy right based on their ambition and go to market.

The operating organization that Manoj is responsible for consists of 6 practices:
1. Mobile Broadband – Caters to 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi Network solutions

Before joining Ericsson, Manoj was Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of Mauj Mobile – wireless division of People Group. Mauj Mobile is a Mobile Media Business founded on Consumer Applications and Content Aggregation & Distribution, executed through managed storefronts and monetized through the company’s own fully integrated mobile advertisement platform. As CEO, Manoj led the Mauj Mobile team on their strategic growth path, both in domestic and international markets, addressing telecom operators, media companies, agencies and brands as primary customers.
Manoj has worked at senior management level positions with some of the country’s leading telecom companies.  He was the Chief Operating Officer of Bharti Airtel for Western UP & Uttaranchal and Chief Marketing Officer for Mumbai prior to that.  He was also appointed as Business Head Innovation / New Product Development and VAS Management.
Manoj was instrumental in pioneering the prepaid cellular revolution in India, having been involved in the first retail prepaid business called ACE from Hutchison Max Telecom (now Vodafone) in 1997. He also introduced ‘Info Services’ on the mobile with marketing and entertainment based services during this time frame, paving the way for ‘VAS’ as an important facet of operator offering to the consumer.

V. V. R. Sastry

Mr. V. V. R. Sastry is currently the Executive Director of Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT an autonomous R&D organization under Department of Telecommunication (DOT), Government of India (GOI).  As head of C-DOT board, he is steering the activities of this organization and is actively contributing to R&D activities of C-DOT in strategic telecommunication areas like development of Terabit Routers, Wireless Secure Networks, Gigabit Passive Optical Networks, Next Generation Networks and 4G Wireless Networks.

Mr. V. V. R. Sastry was the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of premier Defence  Public Sector Navaratna Company Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) from 2007 to 2009.  Mr. V. V. R. Sastry was Director (Marketing) of BEL before his elevation as CMD.  During his tenure as Director (Marketing) he took initiatives to bring in marketing orientation to the organization and gave a strong thrust to exports.

After graduating with two degrees – one in Science and another in Electronics & Communication Engineering from Andhra University, he joined BEL-Bangalore in 1969 as Probationary Engineer.  He has more than 40 years of experience in diverse areas such as development and engineering, manufacturing, quality management project management, technology management and marketing.  Mr. Sastry has rich experience in telecommunications and defence electronics areas like military communication, electronic warfare, and strategic components.

He has widely travelled abroad.  He has worked for 13 months in the Development Laboratories of Phillips (Mullard), UK, on electronic circuit design and development of microprocessor based electrical appliances.  He also headed BEL’s New York office for 3 years, during which he had extensive interactions with the US Department of Commerce & State.

He is a Senior Assessor for the CII-EXIM Bank Business Excellence Model.   He was conferred with the prestigious ELCIN-Dun & Bradstreet `Electronics Man of the Year’ Award by ELCINA Electronic Industries Association of India for the year 2007-08.  He is a fellow of IETE and a member of IEEE.

Arun Shetty

Shivkumar Kalyanaraman is a Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) & Senior Manager of the Next Gen Systems & Smarter Planet Solutions Department at IBM India Research Labs, Bangalore. He was previously a Manager of the Next Generation Telecom Research group and a Research Staff Member since 2008. He was a full Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He received a B.Tech degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India in July 1993, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the Ohio State University in 1994 and 1997 respectively. He also holds an Executive M.B.A. (EMBA) degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2005). His current research in IBM is at the intersection of emerging wireless technologies and IBM middleware and systems technologies with applications to large-scale smarter planet problems (grids, traffic etc). He was selected by MIT's Technology Review Magazine in 1999 as one of the top 100 young innovators for the new millenium. He served as the TPC Co-chair of IEEE INFOCOM 2008, and General co-chair of ACM SIGCOMM 2010 in New Delhi. He served on the editorial board of IEEE/ACM Transactions of Networking. K Ravichandran

Ravichandran is working as CTO with Ascend Telecom Infrastructure Pvt limited, a telecom Tower operator and is working in the field of Energy Optimisation, Renewable energy options & Remote Automation functions of tower operations for the last 3 years. Prior to joining Ascend he was responsible for the function of product marketing & management with Telsima Communications for their Fixed and Mobile Wi Max Products. He Graduated from Motilal Nehru National institute of Technology, Allahabad in the year 1988 with in specialisation in Electronics and communication Engineering.

Starting his professional career with NTPC ltd in the area of control and instrumentation of Thermal and Gas power plants he moved on to  Serve  in "Indian Railways Services for Signalling and Telecommunication" in Western and Konkan Railways for 10 years before Joining Telecom sector. He was part of the team rolling out the first private Wire line telecom service in the telecom circle of Mumbai and Maharashtra with Hughes Telecom. Subsequent to merger with Tata Teleservices(Maharashtra) was responsible for planning and rollout of Wire line and Wireless services in the circle in various capacities, before moving to Tata Enterprise Business unit under Tata communications. An avid believer is using technology as a solution for deriving operational efficiency; working at grass root level in implementing practical technology solutions has been his major contributions in his professional career.

Balamuralidhar P

Balamuralidhar P is a Principal Scientist and Head of TCS Innovation Lab at Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), Bangalore. He has obtained Bachelor of Technology from Kerala University in 1985 and Master of Technology (MTech) from IIT Kanpur in 1987. Major areas of research include different aspects of Cyber Physical Systems and Networked Embedded Systems. Before TCS his research careers were with Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER) Mumbai and Sasken Communications Ltd Bangalore.

He has over 24 years of research and development experience in Signal Processing, Embedded Systems and Wireless Communications. He has over 50 publications in various international journals and conferences and over 18 patents filed. Balamuralidhar was the leading TCS participation in two EU FP6 research consortium projects namely My Adaptive Global NET (MAGNET) and End to End Reconfigurability (E2R) in the area of next generation wireless communications. He is also contributing to TCS participation in National bodies like Broadband Wireless Consortium India (BWCI), Global ICT Standards for India (GISFI). In GISFI he is chairing the Internet of Things Workgroup.

Deependra Moitra

Deependra Moitra, Ph.D., is a management consultant, focusing on helping companies enhance their performance through strategic innovation. He has 18 years of multifaceted  experience in innovation management, new business incubation, technology strategy & R&D management, global product development, and business transformation across  software products and services, telecommunications, and aerospace industry segments. He has extensively worked with senior management teams at leading multinational  corporations as well as entrepreneurial ventures, and helped them accelerate business performance improvement and construct strategic platforms for profitable growth. He  also serves on the advisory boards of numerous start-ups and not-for-profit institutions.

Over 9 million consumers have experienced better quality of service because 22 enterprise carriers globally have used Pervazive's patent-pending technology to manage their telecom network operations.

Ruben Shah

Ruben Shah heads the Mobility and Cloud practice for the Communications and Media vertical at Wipro. His charter is to help telcos and media companies to take advantage of advanced technologies like Cloud and Mobility to create differentiation in their business. He has been associated with telcos in developed and emerging markets to develop strategies to leverage opportunities presented by Cloud and Mobility to not just drive cost and operational efficiencies but also increase revenues.

Prior to this Ruben was heading the Business Applications Services portfolio for the Telecom Equipment vertical for US and Europe regions. He has over 18 years of experience in Enterprise applications and IT Outsourcing and has worked in Europe, the US, Japan and India.

Tathagat Varma

Tathagat has been involved with hi-tech software product development over the last two decades with Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and subsequently with Siemens Telecom, Philips Medical Systems and Philips Digital Networks divisions, Huawei Technologies, McAfee and NetScout Systems prior to joining at Yahoo! in significant technical and leadership roles, including starting-up and heading India operations for NetScout Systems between 2004 and 2009. At Yahoo! India R&D, he is responsible for Strategic Programs, Outsourced Product Development and Business Operations. He also leads center-wide Agile adoption, IP Program  and Business Excellence programs. His core expertise is large-scale new product development, project management, strategic program management, software process improvement, agile software development, general management, leadership development, organizational change management, cultural transformation and outsourced product development. Apart from developing software products, he holds the unique distinction of being the youngest member of 13th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, where he participated as scientist and stayed at the Indian permanent station Maitri for a period of 16 months during 1993-95, and worked on data communication between India and Antarctica.

Tathagat holds an MSc Computer Science from JK Institute of Applied Physics and Technology, Allahabad University, a Post Graduate Certificate in HR Management (PGCHRM) from Xavier Labor Research Institute School of Business and Human Resources (XLRI), Jamshedpur and Certificates in Business Leadership Skills, Executive Leadership and Financial Management from Cornell University, USA. Ishwar Parulkar

Dr. Ishwar Parulkar is a Cisco Distinguished Engineer and the CTO for Service Provider Access Group. In this role he is responsible for technology and architecture of products spanning small cells, service provider Wi-Fi access points and cell-site, access, pre-aggregation and aggregation routers. After spending several years in Silicon Valley in USA, Dr. Parulkar relocated to India in 2010 to lead conception and development of 3G/4G advanced services routers entirely from the Bangalore site. In addition to being an innovative product in its space, the router platforms have been a proof point for developing leading edge, global hi-tech ICT products end-to-end from India. The routers won the 2012 NASSCOM Innovation Award for New Technology Advancement and the 2012 Economic Times Award for the Most Innovative Telecom Infrastructure Product. In addition to launching new global networking products and technology, Dr. Parulkar is passionate about and deeply involved in building technical leadership and a culture of innovation in the Indian IT landscape.

Prior to Cisco, Dr. Parulkar was a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems (Santa Clara, USA), where he was instrumental in architecting and developing several generations of SPARC servers, storage/networking datacenter equipment and associated high-performance microprocessors/chipsets. Before his stint at Sun, Dr. Parulkar worked at Apple (Cupertino, USA) on their first generation laptops and the radical Newton handheld PDA, which was a pre-cursor to the smart phone revolution. He has made many fundamental innovative contributions to the IT industry, several of which are captured in the 30+ technical papers he has published and the 19 patents he holds. He holds a Ph.D. in EE from University of Southern California. He is currently a member of the EE Technical Advisory Board at University of Southern California. He has been a Program Chair in the past and serves on Program Committees of various premier IEEE conferences currently.

Mansoor Alicherry

Mansoor Alicherry is a Senior Researcher and Technical Manager at Bell-Labs India. He received his B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, M.E. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and M.Phil and PhD from Columbia University, New York all in Computer Science. His current research focus is on network virtualization and cloud computing. He worked in Wipro Global R&D in 1997-1998 and Bell-labs U.S.A from 2000-2011. At Bell-labs, he worked on various research projects in optical networking and enterprise security that were productized by Alcatel-Lucent. His successful research to product transitions includes network management systems, network design tools, and optical line system configuration tools.

He was a founding member and the architect of Alcatel-Lucent’s security product Omniaccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian. He has published over 30 papers in reputed international journals and conferences. He has worked on wide range of topics like approximation algorithms, mobile networks, network design, and network security.

Kalimani Venkatesan

Kalimani Venkatesan G., is currently Assistant Vice President – Technology at the Aricent Group, where he focuses on Datacom Networks.

Kalimani is involved in Technology consulting, Solution architecting, identifying and creating Product-enabler solutions. Kalimani has a rich Product Engineering experience in the areas of Access-Aggregation, Packet-Optical Transport, Wireless Backhaul and the Mobile Internet Offload.

Kalimani has published papers and has been an invited speaker in conferences. His paper on "Carrier Ethernet - State of Art and Challenges Ahead" bagged the best paper award at the first IEEE ANTS 2007 conference at Mumbai, India.

Kalimani Venkatesan has more than 16 years of experience in the Industry and earned his Master of Science (Research) in Communication Networks from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India in 1997, and Bachelors in Engineering from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, India in 1994.
